Rhythmanalysis, by philosopher and sociologist Henri Lefebvre, proposes a novel mode of inquiry through an attunement into the rhythms that pervade our existence. Waves cascade across bodies of water and propagate through tumultuous flux; these are the rhythms in water that continue to shape estuaries, gorges, land masses and ocean floors, defining the stage of humanity’s sprawl. This work is the result of contemplating the flow of water into the gorges in the Finger Lakes region of Ithaca, NY, and marveling at the sublime forces at play within our environment. I posit the sway of an artistic agency within nature which seeks to draw; air, water, wind, heat, gravity and motions of celestial bodies collude to draw patterns on lands, shape rivers and embryos, and structure growth and decay. I am interested in the parallels between the act of drawing and notions of the universal; mathematics is to science what drawing is to art. This primacy considers drawing in its most generous understanding; to cause to move continuously toward or after a force is applied; to extract an essence; to induce a response. I aim to channel energy from natural forces to infuse visual rhythm into this piece. This sculpture acts as a material nexus of clues to infer the coexistence of a primal void created via this unavoidable dynamic exchange of essences with our surroundings. It also conveys the void that is inherent in all visible matter, such that a roaring river can also be poetically regarded as a dramatic tango between water and air. I drew the essence of cascading water, reinvented flux as coursing upwards, against the gargantuan.

This is the plight of the massless -- the exodus of gravity.
